The Food and Drink Issue
Rhea Karam
Shoppers
“This project observes how individuals in modern society develop personal identities within consumerism. In these images, women’s gestures and expressions communicate anxiety, tension and alienation: The women see ways to construct an all-important self-image, but often lose themselves. Roots intact or fabricated, identities formed from experiences or a set of media images, women are inevitably face to face with the frustrations, complications and harsh self-examinations that accompany the act of shopping.”

Born in Beirut, Rhea Karam now lives in New York. Her work has been exhibited in New York, Paris and Dubai, and can be seen at rheakaram.com.
